Abstract: A revised edition of a 1982 title originally published as a BAR, and here updated to include results of a further decade of research and discoveries, providing a comprehensive source book for the early development of an upland landscape in England. Individual contributions begin with `Geology and topography of north-east Yorkshire' by J E Hemingway (4--14), followed by `Prehistoric environments' by I G Simmons, M A Atherden, E W Cloutman, P R Cundill, J B Innes & R L Jones (15--49) and `Military activity' during the Roman age by B R Hartley (160--6). There is an appendix `Prehistoric trackways' (169) and a `Bibliography' (170).
