Abstract: Considers the physical remains of the non-ferrous metal mining industry in the historic counties of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Breconshire, Flintshire and Denbighshire, dating from the Bronze Age to the early twentieth century but with special reference to the period from the early eighteenth century to the late nineteenth century. It focuses in particular upon the meaning and interpretation of a number of mining landscapes in terms of the mining and processing techniques that are represented, and complements a number of studies which have concentrated upon historical evidence. The volume provides an introduction to the field archaeology of the mining industry, as well as providing a detailed record of the surviving field evidence. A brief overview of the significance of metal mining landscapes and a history of mining and ore processing in the study area is followed by descriptions and interpretations of selected mining landscapes. Descriptions are accompanied by plans and by ground-level and aerial photographs. A final chapter considers a number of management issues relating to mining landscapes, including the question of presentation and display. Includes Welsh, French and German summaries; a glossary of mining terms; and
