Abstract:
Fieldwork over a wide area, and examination of collections in many museums in England and Wales, has enabled a fairly full picture to be built up of the industry which operated on a large scale from about AD 60 to 5th century supplying coarse grey kitchen wares to many areas of southern Britain. Discussed are: the raw materials, organization and technology; the origins of the industry and its later development, with a corpus of pottery types; and the distribution of the wares. Appended are lists and gazetteers and a report on the determination of firing temperature by the thermal expansion method.
