Abstract: |
Practical ideas for, and rationale of, teaching archaeology in schools. M Corbishley (pp 3-8) shows how the public's perception of archaeology must influence the way we teach it, while Peter Clarke (9-12) stresses the basic skills (weighing evidence, understanding materials, etc) which archaeology can impart. Two papers on making videos follow: Peter Stone & Peter Phillips (13-16), and Marion Blockley (17-23). A computer package, the Sandwell Adventure, is described by David Breedon (24-5): the child has to make 'excavation' decisions, exercising spatial abilities and logic. Site visits to the Sandwell Valley (Michael A Hodder, 26-7) provide a variety of educational experiences. Homeric drama workshops provided an opportunity to teach archaeological method and experimental work (eg spinning), as Rayna Andrew (28-32) explains. More experimental work (pottery firing) is described by John Steane from his Lyveden work (33-7) which involved junior boys under VIth form leadership. Warwickshire archaeology provided the inspiration for Christina Parker's paper-based Roman package (38-40) and Gilles Crawford's package of models based on Neo to AS mortuary practices (41-4). Long-term activities on the Lunt Roman site are outlined by Margaret Rylatt (45-7), while the newer Crickley Hill Bus exhibition (Marjorie Imlah, 48) has been inspiring many school projects in Gloucestershire and beyond. Finally, John Steane (49-50) describes the activities of the CBA Schools Committee. |
