Abstract: |
The first editor provides an introduction (1-10) recording that 7625 axes are covered by this volume, 4079 of them assignable to petrological groups. M B Fenton & R J A Travis (12-13) describe 'A method for taking petrological samples from stone implements' (core drilling does least damage and allows multiple analyses). Sixteen papers on regional topics follow. R V Davis, Hilary Howard & I F Smith (14-20) contribute 'The petrological identification of stone implements from south-west England: sixth report'. A G Woodcock, D B Kelly & A R Woolley (21-33) cover south-east England, while the editors treat London and Middlesex (34-5). Barbara Green takes East Anglia (second report, 36-40; W A Cummins & W R G Moore (41-4) south-east Midlands; the editors (45-8) east Midlands (3rd report). F W Shotton covers the west Midlands (third report, 49-51). Moving north, Patricia Phillips, W A Cummins & L Keen (52-9) give the second report on Yorkshire implements, while G R Coope, D J Robinson & F E S Roe (60-6) cover implements from Lancashire and Cheshire. An interim report on Isle of Man pieces is provided by G R Coope & L S Garrad (67-70), while C I Fell & R V Davis (71-7) treat the Cumbrian material. The north-east is taken by W A Cummins & A F Harding (78-84) and Scotland by P R Ritchie & J G Scott (85-91), with M B Fenton (92-132) reporting the shaft-hole pieces (battle-axes and axe-hammers) from Scotland. Wales is covered by C H Houlder (133-6) and Ireland by E L Francis, P J Francis & J Preston (137-40). About half the volume is taken up by the identification lists and distribution maps. A general conclusion is that most of the implements originate from deliberately exploited rock sources, with random pebbles (including glacial erratics) used opportunistically. |
