Abstract: Some Meso and EBA activity was followed by a late pre-Roman Iron Age settlement (1st century BC to the Roman conquest) with rectangular houses in enclosures. The Roman settlement probably originated as a vicus, since there is some evidence for a fort (post-Boudican?). The settlement occupied between 8 and 12ha and was enclosed by a defensive earthwork (?late 2nd century); some industrial activity fell off in 3rd and had ceased by 4th century. A temple structure and votives, and later on some Christian evidence, indicate the beliefs of Canonium; cemeteries contain both Roman and Saxon burials, with coffins and timber vaults for the Roman period.
