Excavations in the legionary fortress at Bartholomew Street East, Exeter, 1959
Neil Holbrook
Aileen Fox
23 - 57
Excavations revealed a series of timber buildings in the intervallum on the NW side. The earliest structures were associated with ironworking; they were superseded by two successive ovens and finally by a row of small timber buildings. Following the abandonment of the fortress the via sagularis was incorporated into the civil street system, but soon went out of use. Evidence for the foundation date of the fortress is reviewed. Trial excavations at Honeyditches and the nature of the Roman occupation at Seaton
Neil Holbrook
59 - 74
Further excavations revealed that the 1969 'beam slots' were the flanking ditches of two successive trackways leading to the 4th century enclosure. Other archaeological sites in Seaton are discussed and a case made for identifying the Couchill remains as a Roman fort. The stone buildings at Honeyditches may have formed a mansio rather than a villa. Au (abr)
Excavations within the Anglo-Saxon enclosure at Berry Meadow, Kingsteignton, in 1985
Peter J Weddell
75 - 96
The circular plan of the village is believed to date from early 10th century. Excavations in the centre revealed only enclosure ditches and trackways, the earliest dating to 7th/10th century. The final phase, 13th/14th century, coincided with the construction of a mill leat. A Roman feature was examined and a small collection of RB and prehistoric finds made. The status and character of the Saxon settlement remain uncertain. Au(adp)
Great Torrington Castle
Robert A Higham
Seán Goddard
97 - 103
Preservation of the castle was found to be good, despite landscaping, and a considerable quantity of med pottery (not figured) was recovered in a small excavation.
