Abstract
Fenland Management Project -- the way forward
Clare Rouffignac, de
1 - 2
A paper sketching the nature of forthcoming reports arising from the FMP. The nature of the sampling of sites is such that the scope for individual analyses is limited. Thus, a series of analytical volumes taking the results from a number of sites along with material collected from the preceding Fenland Survey are proposed. The exceptions to this are Feltwell Anchor prehistoric pot-boiler mound and Northwold complex prehistoric site (both in Norfolk) which warrant their own reports.
Langwood Farm West and environs
Christopher Evans
3 - 11
Reports investigations into a 10ha IA ridge-top settlement complex with a lesser Roman component. Details include: the topography; surface investigations (with GIS proposed for the dfuture); limited test-pit and trench investigations; fieldwalking densities (which remarkably produced c13,500 artefacts from the 12.5% transect sample -- mostly worked flint and ceramics); finally, results from fifty excavation test stations and environs sampling are recorded.
Heritage Lincoln
12 - 19
Reports results from five sites evaluated in 1994. IA pottery, animal bone, and burnt stone were located at the presumably domestic site at `Fen Farm, Pinchbeck' (Dale Trimble, 12--13), along with ditches that may have formed part of a water management system. `Hagnaby Lock, Stickford' by Dale Trimble (13--15), exhibited pottery, burnt flint and stone, and flint and is thought to be a well preserved BA occupation/industrial activity site. Magnetometer survey was undertaken by the AML at both the above sites. Early Saxon pot scatters were found at `Leaves Lake Drove, Pinchbeck' (15), along with intersecting ditches and gullies. `Baston Drove, Thurlby' (15) revealed RB pottery, including an upright urn, and a well. Finally, `Hoe Hills, Dowsby' (16--19), witnessed excavation at the site of a scatter of predominantly Early Saxon pot, in addition to limited excavation of a barrow from the cemetery site (to see if it was BA or Saxon) and retrieval of palaeosols sealed beneath the mound. The latter three site reports were authored by Tom Lane. Artefacts have only been assessed from the Fen Farm site and the other four site results must therefore be regarded as preliminary. All sites are in Lincolnshire.
Excavation of a burnt mound at High Fen Drove, Northwold
Andy Crowson
20 - 23
Reports the excavation of a crescent shaped burnt mound. Beaker pottery and charred plant remains were recovered. Associated pits and ditches indicate a possible water management function.
Excavations on the Fen Causeway at Straw Hall Farm, Downham West
Andy Crowson
24 - 25
Investigations at this site on the Fen Causeway communication route enabled sampling of the adjacent field system and canal. The road, at this point, is also represented by a single road line and therefore may represent all building phases in one. It was demonstrated that the cut for the canal was contemporary with only the second phase of road building. The fields are thought to have been agricultural, briquetage and charcoal rich silty dumps indicate possible contemporary salt-making activity in the vicinity.
Environmental archaeology: third progress report
Peter L Murphy
26 - 29
Update on results from the first stage of fieldwork as part of the Fenland Management Project.
Air photo interpretation over the Lincolnshire Fenlands: a second interim note
Rog Palmer
30 - 36
Reappraisal of the past twelve months' work on RCHME's National Mapping Programme in this county. Includes details of the incorporation and/or use of vertical photographs from 1946 held at the National Library of Air Photographs, Swindon, and examples of aerial archaeology mapping of IA--RB use of the Fens.
Cambridge Archaeological Unit
37 - 49
Recent reports on `Iron Age pit alignments and Roman settlement features at Meadow Lane, St Ives' by Joshua Pollard (37--42) and `Investigations at King's Dyke Pit, Whittlesey, Peterborough' by Kasia Gdaniec & Richard Mortimer (42--9).
Archaeological Field Unit, Cambs County Council
50 - 72
Includes reports on: `An Iron Age/Romano-British settlement at Milton' by Tim Reynolds (50--7); `Iron Age and Roman settlement remains near Tort Hill, Sawtry' by Ken Welsh (57--9); `Excavations of Romano-British cropmarks at Throckenholt Farm, Parson Drove' by Simon Bray (60--3); `Bridge Lane, Wimblington: the medieval hamlet of Estwode' by Ben Robinson (63--7); `A medieval waterfront at The Maltings, Ely' by Tim Reynolds (67--70); and `An eighteenth century road at Dog in a Doublet, Thorney, Cambridgeshire' by Ken Welsh (70--2).
