Abstract:
Following the desk based assessment and evaluation, it was necessary to conduct a watching brief on all groundworks associated with the development at Market Dock North, Long Row, South Shields. This was due to the high potential for modern archaeology surviving on-site (Brigham and Cowan's dock and associated buildings, opened 1905) and the potential for earlier deposits not truncated by the 1905 developments. The evaluation revealed a mid 18th timber dock surviving, and other earlier deposits could be revealed by the excavation for foundations.
