Abstract: |
Headland Archaeology was commissioned by OMI Architects to undertake a programme of building recording at Myretoun Barn, Menstrie. The building is in a poor state of repair with only a small section of the roof surviving and many of the walls showing signs of collapse. It comprised a two storied barn constructed of rubble stone along a steep south facing slope. The work undertaken as part of the current project enabled a preliminary phasing of some elements of the building. These included the insertion and blocking of windows and doors plus a significant change in the roof design from a wide single pitch to a double pitch with double gables at each end. Given its form and location the most likely use of the building, through much of its life, would appear to be as a livestock shelter below with a large storage area, probably for wool above. |
