Abstract: |
Geophsical survey and trial trenching were carried out on a spur of high ground to investigate whether, as was suggested by the results of a watching brief in 1994 and evaluation trenching in 1999, the site contained the remains of a Roman fort. No evidence to substantiate the presence of a fort was found by either means, but evidence of archaeological activity dating from the Late Iron Age through the Roman period was recorded. A metalled surface and domestic refuse may have been associated with occupation adjacent to Watling Street. A probable well was recorded at the eastern side of the spur, from which a number of high-status objects were recovered. These may indicate the site of a building in the vicinity. There was otherwise a relatively low level of finds across the site. |
