Abstract: |
Headland Archaeology was commissioned by National Museums of Scotland (NMS) to undertake a programme of building recording at there collection centre on West Granton Road, Edinburgh. Three buildings were due to be demolished as part of the expansion and redevelopment of the NMS collections centre. These buildings were in a moderate state of repair and had been stripped of all the modern internal fixtures and fittings. The site comprised three brick constructed single storey buildings dating to the late 1940's/early 1950's including two storage blocks and an office block. The buildings were thought to have been constructed by ex service personnel as part of a programme of works to retrain the large number of soldiers returning to the UK after WW11. The work undertaken as part of the current project enabled a preliminary phasing of some elements of the building. These included the insertion and blocking of windows and doors and the construction of two new gable ends. Donald Wilson (Headland Archaeology Ltd) 2013 |
