Abstract:
A revised desk-top assessment of the archaeological impact of the proposed rehabilitation of a water main was undertaken in the light of the completion of a magnetometer survey. The proposals would directly affect the remains of Wroxeter Roman city, a SAM. The proposed works were numbered as interventions 1-17. Interventions 1-11 were located on or very close to the lines of Roman roads within the town, whilst 12-17 followed the line of a road established in the post-medieval period. The latter interventions would also cut through the site of the medieval village of Wroxeter, and possibly through its early medieval or immediately post-Roman predecessor. Each of the proposed interventions was considered in turn, and it was concluded that all, with the possible exception of 17, would be very likely to impinge on archaeological deposits of Roman, medieval or post-medieval date. Although a topsoil of 0.30-0.50m lay across virtually the whole site, the 1m depth of the proposed excavations made it imperative that full archaeological recording should be carried out. Re-location of the interventions was unlikely to be useful in minimising the effects of the work, as this would merely cause the destruction of other archaeological deposits. It was nonetheless noted that re-location of some of the interventions could be necessary in the event that archaeological remains of great significance, such as a mosaic floor, were to be encountered.
