Abstract: An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a cellular radio base station which lay close to Whitley Grange, a house which had been dated to 1667. A walled garden contemporary with the house had been constructed over an earlier moat, which survived as a roughly triangular pond some 40m north-east of the house. The proposed development site lay 50m west of the surviving section of the moat, and it was thought that the northern arm of the moat may have extended into it. During the evaluation, a modern pit containing brick rubble, sandstone fragments and modern pottery was revealed, but no features or deposits of archaeological significance were observed. [AIP]
