Leche House, Chester
Frank Simpson
5 - 22
Leche House on Watergate Street in Chester was considered to have been the town house of the Leches of Carden, erected in 1570. However, the author contends that the architectural details of the building do not support this view. The history of the Leches is recounted and documentary evidence is presented which suggests the house was connected with a different branch of the family. The house itself, including fixtures and decoration, is then described in some detail. A second house to the rear of the main property, 'Lion House', is also described. LD

Article describing repair and renovation works to elements of Chester Cathedral, including the removal of some 550 tons of soil and 80 tons of broken stone from the pockets of the groining in the cloisters and other places. The broken stones included fragments of all periods from Norman times onwards. During the works evidence of Early English architecture was noted, and some faulty building work of the medieval period was exposed. LD
