Chester Castle, AD 907-1925
Frank Simpson
71 - 132
Historical account and description of Chester Castle, which originated as a fortified enclosure prior to AD 907. Includes discussion of recent alterations and works, such as the clearing out of the chapel in the tower in 1921, and restoration of 'A' block, originally built in 1809-10. Masons' marks discovered during restoration of the tower are illustrated and the remains of wall paintings in the chapel are described. A bricked-up doorway and a passage were found during excavations on the east side of 'A' block. LD

Jupiter Tanarus
R G Collingwood
154 - 161
A Roman altar found in Foregate Street, Chester, in 1653 is now kept at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Although its inscription is now barely legible, it was transcribed the day after discovery. The author discusses previous interpretations of the inscription, based primarily on the initial transcription, and makes his own examination. He concludes that the dedication of the altar is to 'Jupiter Tanarus', representing a blend of Roman and Celtic gods. LD
