Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology carried out a watching brief during demolition and construction groundworks for a residential development. The site was known to have potential for the survival of human remains since inhumation burials, thought to date from the period of the Civil War, had been found during the construction of an extension to the factory that formerly occupied it. Evidence of extensive modern truncation from service trenches associated with the construction of the factory in the 1960s was seen during the watching brief, especially on the lower slope of the development area. However, a number of disturbed inhumation burials, dated to the Saxon period by an iron knife found with one of them, were found in the upper south-eastern part of the site. An excavation was therefore undertaken in two areas separated by the site compound and access route (where no impact on potential archaeology was to occur), as a result of which part of a Mid Saxon cemetery containing 26 inhumation burials in various states of preservation was recorded. Disarticulated human bones were also recovered from the former land surface/subsoil layer. Finds from the graves included a seax, other iron knives and a bone comb. Other artefacts recovered, considered to be either residual or intrusive, included pottery, worked and burnt flint and animal bone. |
