Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Laing O'Rourke Construction to undertake an archaeological watching brief during ground site investigations at 1 Blackfriars Road, London, centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) 531600 180450. The watching brief was undertaken intermittently between January and February 2014. As a result of the previous evaluation of the Site in 2003, an area of archaeological potential was identified and works within this area were required to be archaeologically monitored. The principal aim of the works was to monitor and record foundation inspection pits in the north-western corner of the Site which aimed to identify obstructions in advance of piling. The monitoring of the investigation works identified large areas of disturbed ground, although similar alluvial and humified clay deposits to those encountered in an earlier evaluation were identified. A single wall and a possible rubbish pit, both 18th-19th century in date, were recorded during the course of the work. Two near complete pottery vessels were also recovered.
