Abstract: |
Headland Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation by trial trenching on the Forth Replacement Crossing at Land Parcel 6, NT 1117 (centred), to assess the presence/absence of archaeological features in an area identified as having good archaeological potential in the Forth Replacement Crossing Environmental Statement (Jacobs Arup, 2009). The work was commissioned by Transport Scotland, managed and monitored by Jacobs Arup and undertaken in advance of the proposed commencement of construction works. A total of 36 trenches (3530m2) were excavated comprising a 5% sample across two fields. Trenches were sited to ensure good spatial coverage. The trial trenching revealed two curvilinear ditches and an associated posthole that may relate to prehistoric settlement around which a larger area (788m2) was opened to reveal its full extent. This small cluster of features is of probable prehistoric date. Ditches and furrows relating to pre-modern agricultural activity on site along with an isolated pit were also exposed. The trial trenching revealed two curvilinear ditches and associated posthole around which a larger area (600 m2) was opened to reveal its full extent. These small features are of probable post-medieval date and may reflect small-scale industrial or agricultural activity. Evidence of pre-modern agricultural activity on site was revealed in the form of furrows and Forth drainage ditch. No other features of archaeological interest were encountered. |
