Abstract: |
An ironworks was established at Low Moor in 1791, which exploited local mineral reserves and for many years was a highly successful producer of cast and later wrought iron, as well as finished engineered goods, but its fortunes declined rapidly during the 20th century. The works occupied an extensive area but the present recording concerns three adjoining buildings off Long Row, one of which is a large former foundry, parts of which may survive from the 1791 works, and also the site of two now demolished blast furnaces. |
