Abstract: |
A scheme of archaeological works (evaluation, buildings recording, watching brief and mitigation) was undertaken on a site formerly occupied by the post-medieval Bishop's Mill, the former Durham Ice Rink dating to the 1940s and associated car parks. A buildings survey was undertaken of the remains of the 18th century Bishop's Mill with later additions, and the former 1940s Durham Ice Rink. The mitigation areas produced largely negative results, with most trenches containing made ground deposits and modern alluvial deposits. A limited number of 19th century structures were found, probably relating to the former Freeman's Reach Cottages. The poor preservation of buried archaeological features is most likely due to the demolition of deep structures prior to the construction of the former Durham Ice Rink. There will be no further below ground archaeological work. |
