Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by David Reynolds on behalf of Bath and North East Somerset County Council to undertake an archaeological watching brief during the excavation of a trench for a replacement drainage pipe along the High Street, Bath, Bath and North East Somerset (NGR ST 75104 64839). The archaeological works consisted of monitoring the excavation of a pipe trench running from the pavement north of the Abbey to the pavement north of the National Westminster Bank and were part of a wider highway improvement. No archaeological deposits were encountered during the course of the works. The majority of the pipe route was though made ground deposits, with a substantial level of disturbance. A dark greyish brown cessy silty clay was discovered at a depth of 1.20m within part of the trench however this was also likely to be within made ground. The cellar for the National Westminster Bank was encountered within the northern part of the pipe trench and was encountered at a depth of between 0.67m and 2m.
