Abstract: |
This report presents the results of a metal detecting survey undertaken in relation to the creation of woodland in the area of Hawkhill Wood, little France, Edinburgh (NGR NT 29252 71062). The area had been used as a thoroughfare and was contaminated by large amounts of modern detritus such as aluminium cans, ring pulls and wire. However, a fragment of a 2.5Lb iron cannonball was recovered during the survey alongside a buckle of post medieval date. The cannonball probably dates to the late 17th century date and may be associated with nearby Craigmillar Castle. The metal detecting survey also recovered a total of twelve further artefacts, the majority relating to modern farming activity. |
