Presents detailed evidence supporting various theories as to the internal and external form of the turrets.

A paper concerning 1976--77 work at the site directed by Peter Moffat and hitherto only published in note form. There is particular emphasis on the discovery of a stone cist burial and its implications for funerary practice in Roman and post-Roman northern Britain. There is an appendix on `The cist burial from Sewingshields, Hadrian's Wall' by Justine Bayley (67--8).

Excavations in advance of redevelopment revealed truncation by nineteenth- or twentieth-century buildings and service trenches. Post-medieval layers had been levelled but thirteenth- and fourteenth-century posthole structures were recorded along with traces of early ploughing of the demesne lands. Both the latter features were aligned north-west to south-east providing increased understanding of Tynemouth's `early row plan'. Note on excavations to investigate the possibility that the henge functioned as part of a herding regime in the Early Neolithic and to assess current and ongoing levels of damage to the monument. Repeat dating of the droveway feature should help clarify its original function.
