Abstract:
A conservation project at Shildon engine house and mine workings, near Blanchland, Northumberland necessitated a phase of historic building recording and archaeological monitoring of all conservation works. This project was undertaken on behalf of North Pennines Area of Outstanding Beauty (AONB) Partnership. The works to the upstanding building principally involved clearing out the structures, masonry repairs and wall head consolidation to make the structure safe for public access. The structure was generally in very good condition. This can perhaps be explained by the massive construction of the masonry, built to carry the loads of the original machinery. The areas of secondary masonry relating to later phases was found to be in a much more degraded state, requiring more rebuilding. The main phasing of the main structure (built 1806) related to its original use as an Engine House for the associated mine workings to the immediate east, pumping water from the mine below. The Engine House was primarily in use in the early 19th century. An associated secondary boiler house and chimney are attached to the north of the Engine House. This boiler house was much reduced, with only parts upstanding A second major reordering of the structure was undertaken in the later 19th century following the building falling out of use as an engine house. The structure was converted into accommodation for lead workers and the extensive alterations to the fabric are clearly visible on the interior - primarily relating to inserted fireplaces and flues.
