Abstract:
Excavations, undertaken by Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd near to Commonhead, Swindon, between July 2015 and April 2016, exposed evidence of archaeological activity spanning from the Prehistoric to the medieval period. The prehistoric activity on site consisted of the remains of a probable, post-built, round-house and boundary ditches, along with a broad scatter of other individual features concentrated within the south-eastern portion of the site. Whilst the majority of features and deposits dating to the Prehistoric period clustered around the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age, unstratified lithic artefacts of an earlier date were also identified. To the north-west however, features from the medieval period predominated. The majority of these features appeared to relate to an evolving system of agricultural enclosures, represented by discrete land parcels, defined by ditches. However, concentrated toward the north-western limit of the site, a significant complex of stone built structures was identified. The structural remains appeared to represent at least three substantial stone buildings, with the walls of the best preserved example standing over 0.50m high. Despite clear evidence that the majority of the structures had been comprehensively dismantled, some features indicative of specific functions did survive.
