TG 518125. Examination of a large deposit, mainly rubbish with a little structural evidence, produced three distinct pottery groups: (1) soon after AD 200, mostly local wares; (2) centred on AD 285; (3) five fabrics not later than AD 390, including dark colour-coated, calcite-gritted, imitation samian, orange and "self-coloured" wares. The inclusion in this third group of 60% of non-local wares appears to reflect the post-367 centralisation of the pottery industry, with specialisation in type of vessel to fabric.

[TF 9820]. The fifth season of work confirmed, with only minor changes, the sequence previously established. New finds include a bakehouse, followed in 8th century by a well and a cistern. During Phase II, AD 840-1000, there was a fifty-year gap in occupation followed by renewed activity. In Phase III at least six separate houses in their own enclosures included one 22ft x 47 with inset porch. Three boat-shaped houses in Phase IV, 1050-1175, may indicate a Scandinavian presence. More light has been thrown on development of building techniques. Monograph forthcoming.
