Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by NMC Nomenca on behalf of Severn Trent Water, to undertake an archaeological watching brief during test-pitting works associated with the renewal/replacement of a section of water main. The monitored works covered a length of 1.1 km from the northern section of Sharply Hill Road, LE6 0AH, c. 200 m north-west of Bradgate Park (NGR 452306 311675), to the Hallgates Reservoir (NGR 453292 311577), south of Roecliffe Road, Leicester, LE12 8TN. The work was undertaken between the 23rd and 25th September 2019. Seven test pits were monitored along the route of the existing pipeline. No artefacts, features or deposits of archaeological significance were found during the fieldwork. The lack of archaeological remains may provide a genuine reflection of the character of past activity in the area. However, the small scale of the excavations and previous disturbance resulting from the installation of the existing water main and a ceramic drain could also partially account for the negative results of the watching brief. Test Pits 1-4 did not extend below the subsoil and/or layers of redeposited material despite being excavated to depths ranging from 0.8 m to 1.3 m below ground level. Accordingly, any archaeological remains that may be present/survive in these areas are potentially buried at depths exceeding the level of impact resulting from the water main renewal works.
