Abstract: |
The work associated with this project was carried out by staff from HFA, in accordance with the written scheme of investigation for archaeological observation, investigation and recording produced by HFA, (Atkinson, D. July 2021), and with reference to the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists 2014 (a) Standard and Guidance for an archaeological watching brief
The scheme of works comprised the monitoring of the excavation of twelve foundation pits for the portal frame building.
Standard Humber Field Archaeology recording procedures were used throughout; each identified feature was allocated a context number, with written descriptions recorded on pro forma sheets. Plans and sections were drawn to scale on pre-printed permatrace sheets. A digital photographic record was maintained. The locations of the trenches and the level of the features were surveyed relative to the Ordnance Survey National Grid and Ordnance Datum respectively, using survey-grade GPS equipment. Finds encountered were recorded to professional standards using recognised procedures and numbering systems compatible with the accessioning system employed by the recipient museums service (in this the East Riding of Yorkshire Museums Service. In August 2021 a programme of archaeological observation, investigation and recording was undertaken by Humber Field Archaeology in advance of the construction of a new portal frame agricultural building on land at Barmby Farm, York Road, Barmby Moor, East Riding of Yorkshire.
Monitoring undertaken during the excavation of twelve foundation pits revealed a sequence of deposit consisting of fine yellow natural sand overlain by a thin layer of modern sandy topsoil.
No archaeological features were identified and no artefacts were recovered. |
