Abstract:
Archive Research Standing Building Survey (Level 1) Structural watching Brief AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by SGN to undertake an historic building survey of two redundant gasholders at Homesdale Road, Bromley in Greater London in advance of their demolition. The two gasholders on the site are located in a locked compound between Homesdale Road and Liddon Road to the south-east of Bromley. The earlier gasholder, No 5, was constructed in the 1880s - 1890s as part of an original set of three gasholders for the gasworks at Homesdale Road. It is a frame-guided holder and, prior to its removal, was in a poor condition with no access to the main frame or walkway. The second gasholder, No 4, is a much later 1960s below-ground gasholder, which was erected after the demolition of the other two late 19th century holders. Two phases of works were required, including an initial survey prior to any demolition work, with a second stage undertaken during the demolition process to record the interior of the holders. This exposed the concrete tank in the earlier Gasholder No 5, identifying the dumpling of the concrete tanks and the complex steel and timber framing for the crown support.
