Abstract:
Open area excavation of approx. 0.6 ha at NZ 2452 7270 ahead of housing development. Previous evaluation and excavation in the development area by ASDU and NAA uncovered IA/RB settlements. This excavation uncovered a similar IA/RB settlement and field system as well as post-medieval stone and brick buildings relating to the demolished farmhouse. Notable finds include a rotary quern and a possible hand thrown jar. Analysis of both this phase of works at the site and the previous phase (OASIS-303938) described three phases of the Iron Age settlement: an early to mid Iron Age unenclosed settlement; at least two enclosed settlements, probably contemporary; later re-working and sub-division of the enclosures. The results of the excavations, together with those from the earlier excavations at East Wideopen (ASDU 2014), settlement identified through geophysical survey at Gardener’s House (Biggins et al. 1997, 46) and the Iron Age/Romano-British settlement investigated at Dinnington (WAA 2016, 26), as well as East and West Brunton, Hazelrigg, Blagdon Park 1 and 2, Fox Covert, Shotton (Hodgson et al. 2012) and the recently excavated Iron Age site at Cramlington (NAA 2019), – represent an area of intensive occupation throughout the Iron Age and early Romano-British period. The prehistoric remains from the current excavation are of regional importance because as they add to the corpus of knowledge about activity within the area and aid the understanding of a large expanse of the Iron Age landscape.
