Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring and evaluation of sheltered housing development recorded the site of a WWII AA gun battery Both trenches encountered the remains of concrete structures, much reduced by post-war construction activities. In both areas, the banks around the perimeter of the development area were shown to be relatively modern, postdating the gun-site. A local resident explained that in the 1950s the field had been levelled to create a sports pitch after the houses to the north had been built over existing facilities. The resultant spoil had been banked up around the site. The excavations at Crummock Court represent only the second recorded archaeological excavation of part of a gun-site in Britain and, as such, highlighted previously unseen aspects of an emplacement structure. The other site was excavated in advance of the construction of Olympic Park in London. The evaluation investigated the site of one of the HAA emplacements, and an ancillary building. The HAA gun-pit comprised a standard central holdfast, although with only half the normal number of mounting bolts, but had been augmented with the addition of eight, regularly-spaced concrete arms. Such features had not been identified on any other site, and were likely to represent attempts to alleviate the risk of subsidence in mining areas from the power of the guns' recoil. The second excavated feature was the concrete base of an ancillary structure. This was absent from an aerial photograph of 1941, but was clearly visible in 1945/6, and was therefore a later addition to the site. It had been surrounded by a blast bank, indicating that it contained explosive materials, but was dissimilar to ammunition magazines recorded elsewhere, so was probably an emplacement for secondary armament, such as a Bofors cannon or twin Lewis machine-gun.
