Abstract:
The Rare Plant initially sailed Trans Atlantic routes between the UK via the Azores/Portugal to Newfoundland, Brazil and the West Indies and vice versa. On some trips the Rare Plant would voyage to Mediterranean Ports in Spain, Italy and Greece from Newfoundland. After a change in ownership the Rare Plant stopped sailing Trans Atlantic and sailed between U.K, Ireland and North Sea European ports. Cargoes carried included raw materials, processed materials, fruits, fish and timber. On Oct 08th 1896, the Rare Plant ran aground during a severe storm at Abersoch Bay Wales. The crew were rescued by the Penrhyndu Abersoch Lifeboat. Reports state that the Rare Plant was wrecked. However research shows that the Rare Plant was not wrecked but was refloated and kept sailing until May 17th 1908 when she collided with a steamer near Land's End and sank. The crew were rescued.
