Abstract: |
An archaeological watching was undertaken by AOC Archaeology, from May to December 2018, as a part of the conditions for the construction of a SUDs drainage basin on the land off Sylvan Way in Hainault Forest, Chigwell, Essex, TQ 46832 93272 (Figure 1). The SUDs basin construction consisted of an extensive area of stripping as well as related service trenches and pumping station. The deposits recorded within the site were mostly topsoil and subsoil over undisturbed natural clays. The SUDs basin area and drainage channel showed topsoil overlying disturbed subsoil and woodland paths which were initially thought to be related to the allotments located on Sylvan Way between 1920 to 1966 but which were later reinterpreted due to aerial photographic and cartographic evidence. The deposits here did not impact the natural clays. Undisturbed deposits in these areas occur at height of 74.02m and 72.65m AOD. Only one trench showed disturbance of natural clays, this disturbance of modern made ground and hardcourt was related to the modern housing estate construction of Sylvan Way, the level of undisturbed deposits here was 73.85m AOD. Archaeological features observed were dated to the Modern period, specifically the mid-20th Century. This included remnants of tree bowls, the trees being present on the site until the mid-20th century and two linear pathways perpendicular to one another by which were used as woodland paths. One of these paths was made of roughly lain reused modern and post-medieval brick likely due to flooding, the other was an accumulation deposit of charcoal rich silty clay. Few finds were recovered, these all came from the tree bowls and dated to the Modern period. |
