The AUTOMATA Project Begins!

Late last year the AUTOMATA (AUTOMated enriched digitization of Archaeological liThics and cerAmics) held its kick-off meeting in Pisa. This project, a new Horizon EU research project, combines expertise from 12 different partners  across Europe.

At the end of October, Research Projects Manager Dr Holly Wright travelled to Pisa to participate in this meeting. This coming together of all partners allowed for the creation of a work plan that ensured researchers from each organisation to have a better understanding of their tasks within the first year.

As one of the first European Content Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) projects working with ECHOES, AUTOMATA will transform the process of documenting, classifying, and analysing archaeological artefacts using AI to create 3D models.  Currently the process of creating these 3D models is expensive and time consuming and generates large files sizes. Through AI however the need for human intervention can be reduced. Through AUTOMATA tools and workflows will be developed that will make these models of archaeological objects more efficient and cost effective, ensuring they can be more easily accessed.

The ADS is leading work on Data Management and Curation (WP10) for this project.
