Abstract:
An excavation took place on land off Shaw's Wiend and Boroughgate following an earlier desk-based assessment and evaluation prior to a residential development. The site is believed to cover parts of two medieval burgage plots and further evidence of occupation was revealed in the form of cobbled areas, numerous pits including a series of cess pits, and a stone boundary feature interpreted as a garden wall. Over 600 sherds of 12th-15th century pottery from 11 fabric types were recovered, mostly comprising of domestic cooking pots and some decorated jugs. Overlying evidence dating to the post-medieval period comprised of cobbled surfaces, and well-made stone-lined culverts suggesting a small-scale domestic or industrial function. These features lay within a former yard to the rear of 17th or 18th century buildings fronting onto Boroughgate, until the yard went out of use and a substantial amount of soil subsequently developed when the site was used as a garden. As this still remains the only burgage plots excavated in Appleby to-date, publication of the combined evaluation and excavation results in the county journal is recommended.
