Since the introduction of the Historic Environment (Wales) Act in March 2016, the maintenance of Welsh HERs has become a statutory duty of Welsh Ministers. Wales has four regional HERs which are managed by the four Welsh Archaeological Trusts (WATs). The WATs are independent charitable trusts, part funded by the Welsh Government to provide regional archaeological services. Some additional financial support is provided by a number of the local authorities. Cadw and Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW) monitor the provision of HER services on behalf of the Welsh Government. The HER Benchmarks ([Chitty 2002|Bibliography#Chitty 2002|target='_blank']) have been adapted for use in Wales.
