Historic Environment Character Assessment (HECA) has been carried out by some HERs to provide an overview of the historic environment to form part of the evidence base for Local Development Frameworks (LDF). The results of Historic Landscape Characterisation along with the historic and archaeological data held within the Historic Environment Record are analysed using criteria to identify areas of similar character and origins. These areas are then sub-divided into more detailed zones. These provide a high-level characterisation suitable for Local Planning Authorities to use.
See [English Heritage 2011|Bibliography#English Heritage 2011|target='_blank'] and [English Heritage 2010|Bibliography#English Heritage 2010|target='_blank'] for some examples of Historic Environment Characterisation projects.
