Abstract: discusses the use of the rivers, the course and flow of which have been substantially altered by major engineering works, and the life of Somerset's ports. These include a number of small, mainly landlocked, ports although Bridgwater and Minehead achieved some status in the later medieval period. The ports of each of the major rivers are discussed, with emphasis on the river Axe. Place-name evidence for the location of other small rural landing-places is examined and the nature of possible archaeological remains described
