Discusses Caesar's version of events and suggests locations for some of them, eg oppidum Cassivellauni as Wallbury fort or Ring Hill camp. Cassivellaunus may have been a Trinobantian (clearly Caesar is concealing something here). The passage also demonstrates Caesar's preference for the sensational over the sober and accurate account. His passage on the settlers ex Belgio seems to imply no 'Belgic' invasion, and there is no need to infer a British tribe of Belgae.

Rescue excavation and a watching brief at the secondary school revealed traces of late Iron Age/RB occupation to 4th century AD. Principal features were cremation burials, ditches, walls, and pits, discussed in their local context. Specialist finds reports: pottery, metalwork and coins, a little environmental evidence, archaeomagnetic date for kiln in Buckenhams Field. Au(amp)

Some 20kg of pottery, mainly fine ware jugs, of later 14th to l5th century are catalogued, discussed, and named as Rayleigh High Road ware. No kiln structure was identified, but about 3% of the finds were faulty. Au (abr)

Brief reports on fifty-three projects, mostly new, of prehistoric to postmed date.

Further investigations inside and outside showed no trace of the previously postulated Saxon church. The E end of the present church was elucidated. Numerous burials lie within the church, there is much of the 13th/14th century scissor-braced roof remaining, a Romanesque window reveal was found, and the 14th century tower stair has white Flemish bricks.
