Abstract
The Paviland research project: the field assessment
Stephen H R Aldhouse-Green
3 - 12
Excavation at Goat's Hole, Paviland, has demonstrated the existence of in-situ deposits possibly of Middle Pleistocene age. Some of the scree deposits here are rich in artefacts and faunal remains. These are largely of upper Palaeolithic date with some Mousterian material also present. Excavations at nearby Hound's Hole revealed a complex Quaternary stratigraphic sequence. Partial examination of Foxhole Cave produced evidence of early Mesolithic occupation and there is thought to be the potential for the recovery of undisturbed Palaeolithic material at greater depth.
Geophysical survey at Llanfor, Merioneth, 1997
Peter Crew
Susan Crew
13 - 20
Geophysical survey and examination of air photographs has revealed a number of new sites in this area. These include Roman military sites, an associated vicus, Bronze Age barrows and undated field systems, cultivation terraces and an early farmstead.
Woodland clearance in medieval Glamorgan: pollen evidence from Cefn Hirgoed
Michael J C Walker
M Lawler
Martin Locock
21 - 26
Pollen analysis coupled with radiocarbon dating has produced a record of land use change covering the period from the late twelfth century to the middle fourteenth. The clearance of a mixed woodland, possibly by human action, coincides with the onset of peat accumulation. There is also evidence for some arable cultivation nearby. A discussion of the wider settlement pattern and economic landscape is included.
Mynydd Epynt (Sennybridge Training Area): RCAHM(W) air photo mapping and record creation, Brecknockshire and Carmarthenshire
Toby Driver
27 - 31
Over 200 kms2 of upland landscape in mid-Wales were mapped by the Royal Commission from historic vertical air photographs. This is the largest consolidated landscape area to be mapped in-house by the Royal Commission so far. Its requisition for military training in 1939 has helped to preserve it as a relict agricultural landscape. More then 670 archaeological sites were mapped, of which 472 were new to the archaeological record.
The Brecon Beacons archaeological survey
Robin Skeates
32 - 46
This is the final report on fieldwork carried out in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The survey aimed to determine and record the nature of the archaeological resource, to assess and record the quality of its preservation and to integrate this information into existing databases. A range of sites and finds are also described.
