Reports the excavation of part of the Rudston A cursus in advance of the development of a gas drill site. The two ditches of the cursus were recorded seventy metres apart. A five metre section of each ditch was excavated, with dating evidence from the eastern ditch indicating a Middle Neolithic date. This date is somewhat earlier than previously thought for the Rudston A cursus, but is consistent with the range of dates for other such cursus monuments in the country. Grimston style and All-Over-Corded Beaker pottery sherds, recovered from the site, may have been associated with the construction and abandonment phases. Includes separately authored reports on:

Reports a recently discovered Beaker from Staxton and compares it to two nineteenth-century finds of similar vessels; an attempt is made to refine the likely provenance of these earlier discoveries.

A watching brief identified extensive remains of Romano-British date including part of what could be a `ladder' settlement, with three (or possibly four) enclosures. The remains of three structures were examined, including a probable screen or shelter for wintering stock and a possible latrine. Occupation appeared to have occurred between the mid-third and late-fourth century AD. In one enclosure a crop-drying oven had been constructed over a silted-up ditch; after this structure had fallen into disuse and been levelled, the same area witnessed three successive inhumation burials followed by a cremation. Two other cremations were also found; one of these buried in a Late Roman native-style pot. A single Roman roof tile implies the presence of further `Romanised' structures in the vicinity (possibly a villa). Includes separately authored reports on:
