Abstract:
4-6, Church Street, Oakham is a range of buildings most recently and historically used as a bakery. The site developed behind two cottages fronting Church Street, one of which is Grade II listed. The buildings include a flour store, a bakehouse, a possible stable and a cart shed arranged around a narrow central courtyard. The evolution of the bakery complex involved link buildings, repairs and modifications. The earliest part of 4, Church Street appears to be of mid 18th century date with 19th century modifications, whereas the thatched cottage at 6, Church Street is earlier, and retains much of its original materials and may date from the 17th century (with a 19th century shopfront).
