Abstract:
A watching brief on a development of 8 houses. A previous geophysical survey had tentatively identified regular linear anomalies as buried ridge-and-furrow. No archaeological material, contextual or artefactual, was encountered during the watching brief: the linear anomalies were attributed to the underlying, heavily mineralised natural gravel, which had been laid down in ridges by the flow of the Trent (this theory was confirmed by the geophysicist). Reference to the Domesday Survey suggested that the site had probably lain within water-meadows during the medieval period. Following consultation with the County Planning Archaeologist, the watching brief was terminated after two house plots had been observed.
