Excavations at a coastal site revealed evidence for a substantial Mesolithic settlement and a Bronze Age cist cemetery. Twenty-one radiocarbon determinations indicate that the Mesolithic site dates to the early eighth millennium BP. A core of sediment from stream deposits adjacent to the site provides information on local environmental conditions. The Mesolithic site included a substantial circular structure as well as pit and scoop features. Finds included a considerable quantity of flints including a variety of tools, and marine mollusc material. The Bronze Age cemetery consisted of five cists, one of which contained what appear to be skull fragments. Some pottery fragments, smoothed cobbles and lumps of ochre were also found .

An overview of research on the eastern sector of the Wall considers the construction sequence and structural changes east of Broad Wall and the spacing of the milecastles and turrets, and concludes that the Wall east of Newcastle was a later extension. A survey and limited excavation of a riverside site consisting of a submerged stone and timber platform revealed what was identified as parts of the basement of a horizontal or `Norse' watermill which would once have stood on dry land. Three timbers survived in situ, two of which had previously been radiocarbon dated to the early medieval period. Three other timbers had been recorded previously, along with the remains of several timber stakes, five of which were still in situ. A stone surface between and to the east of the remaining timbers was formed from re-used blocks from a Roman bridge nearby. Thirty-nine displaced blocks of sandstone were recorded. A worked timber resembling a water chute was observed lying on the river bed. Modifications appear to have been made to the mill during its lifetime. The report also looks at the ancient landscape setting of the mill.

Presents the last of a three part catalogue of medieval cross-depicting grave slabs from Northumberland. Features approximately 170 slabs from the deaneries of Alnwick, Bamburgh and Norham. The paper concludes with an analysis and discussion of the carvings from the whole county, problems of dating and interpretation of the emblems used.

Description of sixty-one sestertii and 9 dupondii/asses dating from Vespasian to Marcus Aurelius (AD 180) found with the aid of metal detectors on cultivated land. The coins date from the first and second centuries AD, and were accompanied by evidence of metalworking, the metallurgy of which implied that the coins may have been intended for recycling.
