Abstract

The linear earthworks of West Norfolk
Peter Wade-Martins
23 - 38
Four earthworks, including a little-known one and another whose course is largely misunderstood, are considered in relation to the Roman roads and seen as part of two contemporary but opposing defensive systems dating to the two centuries following the end of Roman rule. They would be effective against cavalry, and the western pair (Fossditch and Bichamditch) are tentatively assigned to Anglo-Saxon settlers, the eastern pair (Panworth and Launditch) to the Late Roman population.
Excavations in Norwich - 1973. The Norwich Survey - third interim report
J P Roberts
Alan Carter
Helen Sutermeister
39 - 71
Work has continued in various parts of the city and a new map of Roman and Saxon finds is given. The form of the late Saxon town is better understood. Sites in Westwick, Pottergate, St Benedict's Street, the city north of the river, and Conesford are described historically and archaeologically. Part of the castle bailey ditch was also dug and possible defence lines mapped. Life expectancy and social context of Norwich buildings is discussed; there were almost complete rebuildings about every 150-200 years.
