Introducing MAIA

ADS Research Projects Manager Dr Holly Wright, has recently announced her position as Vice chair of a new COST Action.

Typically made up of academics, public institutions, or other interested parties, COST Actions are European research networks that bring innovators together to explore the topic of their choice for four years.

At the end of September a new COST Action, MAIA (Managing Artificial Intelligence for Archaeology) began. This group will look specifically at the potential use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) within archaeology. With AI being applied to more non-traditional fields, a greater appreciation is needed of which questions AI can help answer. Similarly, the ethical, epistemological, and hermeneutical challenges, as well as issues of sustainable access need to be addressed.

The goal of the group is to develop best practice and ensure that the correct resources are available, allowing for archaeology to fully utilise AI. This includes making sure its use is FAIR, collaborative, and ethical. A key part of this will include training opportunities for researchers using AI  to work across borders to create comparative and training data.

Researchers of all levels of seniority have the opportunity to participate in the COST Action activities or apply as Working Group members. Information and contact details can be found at the MAIA webpage.
