| Description | The farmstead at Ashes Farm, Fenny Bentley, comprises a mid- to late-17th century, detached, double pile farmhouse with extensions, a 19th century U-shaped range of outbuildings forming a central yard, and an additional modern barn with rectangular concrete surface. It lies within the Peak District National Park. The northern U-shaped range was constructed in the 19th century in a single phase, as part of a complex of agricultural outbuildings which were built in response to the changes in farming intensity as a result of the 19th century revolution in agricultural practices. A Level 2 building survey was undertaken to record the current external and internal character of the two storey combination barn that forms the central and northern building within the U-shaped range of outbuildings. A Level 2 Building Survey provides a descriptive and visual record, as defined by Historic England’s Understanding Historic Buildings (2016), Section 5.2. The survey was undertaken in order to satisfy a conditional approval of an application for planning permission for the conversion of outbuildings at The Ashes Farm into a residential use. The external elevations of the combination barn survive well to eaves height, above which the originally hipped roof has been replaced with a modern corrugated sheet covering. Internally the character of the building has been eroded through the loss of extensive parts of the first floor surface. Many internal wall and floor surfaces have been rendered over with modern materials, although significant areas of traditional brick and stone rubble fabric remains. Little carpentry or fixtures and fittings of note survive, save a small number of doors and ironmongery. A full digital archive consisting of a copy of this report, select photographs which feature as figures within the report and the Written Scheme of Investigation, has been submitted to the Archaeology Data Service for archiving. | ||

| Description | In 2021 Locus Consulting was commissioned by Robert Winter (the ‘Client’) to compile a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) for archaeological works associated with the proposed development at The Ashes Farm, Fenny Bentley, Derbyshire Dales, Derbyshire (the Site). Locus Consulting produced a Heritage Impact Assessment to support an application for planning permission for the works outlined in Section 1.3 in 2021 (Locus Consulting Ltd, 2021). In the event that planning permission is granted, discussions with the local planning authority archaeologist have indicated that a program of historic building recording and archaeological monitoring will be required. This document aims to set out the full scope of works and methodology, for both the historic building recording and the archaeological monitoring. | ||
