Reports on excavations of two mills at Colliford, survey of others at Retallack, and extensive documentary search. A research strategy needs to be developed.

The experience of excavating three ore-washing floors in northern England (mainly l9th century in date) forms a basis for working towards a wider research strategy (see also 90/806).

The area contains structures exemplifying a whole range of (lead) mining and dressing procedures from simple hand dressing to an early flotation mill. Needless demolition of buildings has now slowed and conservation work has been initiated on three sites. Approaches and considerations involved in such conservation work are discussed.

The remains are now recognised as integral to the National Park's features. The impact of the industry on woodlands, settlement, and communications is discussed and the sites themselves briefly introduced. Threats and protective measures are discussed.

The author has carried out recording on the former horse tram depot and some of his drawings are published; he also describes the development and demise of the Ipswich tramway system from 1880 to 1903.

Distribution is mapped from an account book of 1842-7; most customers were in the Borders, with Ireland and London also represented.

The overhead travelling crane installed in 1876 to service the boiler and plate fabrication workshop of Coburg Dockyard in Liverpool was recorded in 1982 by Merseyside Docklands Survey. It is discussed as a conventional archaeological artefact which illustrates a moment in development of the class, reflects the technological environment, and the extent to which the scientific rationalization of technology impinged upon the design.
