Material not previously published can now be set within the wider context of the ceremonial monuments of the Milfield Basin. Yeavering has produced Grimston ware but not Mid-Neolithic; then come Peterborough and Grooved wares and a variety of urns. Intensive EBA use includes a cremation cemetery, but after c 1250 bc the lack of activity may reflect the BA collapse. At each stage the value of looking at a whole landscape and its interacting sites is demonstrated. Hope-Taylor was concentrating on AS material, so more prehistoric evidence may come to light. Apparent gaps in occupation reflect our ignorance of site interactions; continuity and development are certainly visible. There is no need to invoke Iron Age immigrants to explain the field system and fort.

Describes and illustrates an RCHME survey of the defences, gates, interior (much confused by later use), the vicus to S, Vallum, and Military Way. The baths were not found. Study of excavation archives (1956-61) is needed.

Documentary and archaeological evidence show that from about 1600 the castle area gradually became a densely populated and independent township within Newcastle. Developmental plans are shown from the 'old and ruinous' castle of 1580 onwards, and a substantial report treats postmed pottery, metalwork, and textiles, with their documentary context.

Description of a rare survival of heather-thatched building, of two storeys with byre, kitchen/living room, two-cell upper chamber, brick chimneystack, and attached stable. The roof truss is described and vegetation/moss remains analysed; artefacts including a pewter spoon and a clog had been poked into the roofing. A brief inventory of Northumberland-Co Durham-N Yorks heather-thatched buildings is provided and the thatching technique is discussed: this example was rethatched for the Landmark Trust.

This history of the society over 175 years includes many graphs analysing membership figures and comparisons with sister societies. Distribution maps show members and exchanging institutions at 1913 and 1973, and there is also examination of membership by social class.
